Bathrooms are becoming more and more like in-home spas than ever before. But what use is it to have a bathroom that is filled to the brim with luxurious fittings and fixtures, if it remains one of the coldest rooms in the home during the winter months. Says Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse: “Bathroom heating is a must-have for any bathroom worth its salt – it ensures that your bathing experience is comfortable and pleasurable all year round, especially during the colder months.”
While the comfort provided by heating in the bathroom is imperative, the bathroom remains a very functional space as well, and as such, it is also important to have a good source of lighting and air circulation. An excellent solution is to install a bathroom heater-light-extractor unit, otherwise known as a 3-in-1 combo unit.
3-in-1 units explained
Bathroom 3-in-1 units are an all-in-one lighting, extractor and heating solution, which has been specially designed for the hot, wet and humid conditions prevalent in bathroom spaces. Says Melissa: “The 3-in-1 combo units available from The Lighting Warehouse for example, offer three useful functions in one unit – they come with a built-in extractor fan for optimum air circulation, as well as infra red globes that supply lighting and warmth. They are rust-proof and purpose-built for steamy and wet areas, so they are safe, durable and long-lasting.”
Advantages of 3-in-1 combo units
The main advantage of a bathroom 3-in-1 unit is that it comes grouped with three functions in one unit. Says Melissa: “ This means that you can create heat and bright light at the flick of a switch, but at the same time, you can also turn on the extractor fan, to keep the bathroom clear of steam while you are showering.” Another benefit is that these units are an incredibly streamlined, space-saving solution that requires only one installation point in order to perform all three functions.
“The 3-in-1 units are purpose-built for installation in the bathroom ceiling for a streamlined and space-saving aesthetic. You no longer have to install a heater on the wall, a separate light overhead, and then fit an exhaust fan in the room as well. They are perfect for small bathrooms, but they work just as well in larger bathrooms. However, as they are recessed units, they cannot be installed in cement or concrete ceilings, nor can you install them vertically on the walls,” explains Melissa.
Other practical considerations
Bathroom 3-in-1 combo units come in two main configurations – two-light models, or four-light models. Melissa elaborates: “If your bathroom is relatively small or you don’t require too much heat, then a two-light configuration is ideal. On the other hand, if your bathroom is quite large, or you really like things to get warm and toasty, then it is advisable to opt for a four-light model. It is worth noting that the four light combos have the ability to turn on two lights at a time, so you don’t have to use all four at once if you don’t want to, which ensures year-round use.”
Controlling the heat
Something else that you also need to consider when you are choosing bathroom 3-in-1 combo units is how you can control its various functions. Says Melissa: “The 3-in-1 combo units from The Lighting Warehouse for example, come with a special switch that allows individual operation and control of each of the three functions. As such, you can switch the heating, lighting or extraction on individually from one another whenever required.”

Does these heaters replace the normal light as installed in the ceiling? Can they be used as light only?
Hi Adriaan,
The ceiling ones yes. They come with one light in the middle that serves as a normal light in summer.
The heater bulbs also gives off alot of light. there is no need for other lights once these are installed.
Thanks
Hi
Do these units require ducting? If yes, is that supllied?
Thank you.
Hi Tom,
No they don’t. The roof space is totally isolated, and the steam disperses in a roof very quickly.
thanks
Hi,
I’m looking for 3 in one with LED globes.
Hi Harshila,
You can try either code 20607 or code 21535.
The central globe in both is a 10w LED.
The IR globes will always be 275W globes. Not LED as LED globes does not generate heat.
Thanks
Hi, my roof is not pitched can I still use this light/heater/extractor fan combo instead of a ceiling light?

I desperately need to warm up the downstairs bathroom. I would like to use the heater light combo, but the ceiling is a slab. Will this work. If not, are there other options.
Are you able to put higher wattage globes in the heater lights ?
Good day,
My bathroom is 4 by 3 meters. Would the 2 or 4 light, heater, extractor be suitable.
Would I need to make weep holes to exhaust the moisture.
Thank you
